  • 18-20 February 2010 Strandzha Cup Champions

    February 22 , 2010

Strandja CupThis Saturday was the end of the 61st international men boxing tournament Strandzha Cup. Seven Bulgarians reached the finals and twice the hymn of Bulgaria was heard honouring the champions Alexander Alexandrov (51 kg) and Detelin Dalakliv (54 kg). Maryan Momchev (75kg) and Tervel Pulev (91 kg) didn’t come up for their final fights because of injuries. The hot Bulgarian prospects Lyuben Todorov (57 kg), Angel Dimov (60 kg) and Milan Zlatev (64kg) lost their finals with a minimum point difference against far more experienced opponents. About 2000 people applauded the expected bearer of this year’s Strandzha Cup – Detelin Dalakliev. Second best at the tournament became the world champion in the light heavyweight division, the Russian Artur Beterbiev. The best technical boxer became the Armenian Hovhanes Danlyan (48 kg) and the youngest boxer was the 17-year old Stefan Slavchev. It came as u surprise that the double Olympic champion, World and European champion – the Russian Alexey Tishchenko (60 kg), lost on points (2:4) the semifinal against the Uzbek Hurshid Todzhibaev. Unexpectedly the double World champion Abos Atoev also lost on points his semifinal against Adem Kilikchi (Turkey). Despite these two surprises, there was weak competition this year and the absence of traditionally strong participants like the teams of Kazakhstan and Ukraine made it possible for younger Bulgarian boxers to reach the finals. Here are the champions in each division:

    48kg – Hovhanes Danilyan (Armenia)

    51kg – Aleksander Aleksandrov (Bulgaria)

    54kg – Detelin Dalakliev (Bulgaria)

    57kg – Karem Gyurchen (Turkey)

    60kg – Hurshid Todjibaev (Uzbekistan)

    64kg – Roniel Sotolongo (Cuba)

    69kg – Uktamon Rahmonov (Uzbekistan)

    75kg – Adem Kilikchi (Turkey)

  • Kubrat Pulev vs Issosa Mondo in a 8 round battle

    February 9 , 2010

Kubrat Pulev will step on the professional ring fot the sixth time in his career. This will happen on 20 February in Belgium, where Pulev will fight against Issosa Mondo (Congo) who has 3 wins and 2 losses in his record. After proving himself against experienced boxers like Matt Skelton and Gbenga Oloukun, this coming battle for Pulev seems easily predictable. The boxer from Congo is not likely to offer resistance for more than a few rounds against the European champion from Liverpool.   Issosa has had three wins against low-ranked boxers since 2008 and his two losses date from 2000 and from 2004 when he lost on points. Here is a short video from his last fight on 29 January this year in France against Massinisa Hamaili  where the boxer from Congo won after his opponent got injured in the fourth round:

  • Kubrat Pulev vs Oleg Platov

    December 14 , 2009

Platov pre-fightIt has been only a few months since Kubrat Pulev started his professional career and now he already expects his first serious trial. On 30 January he will play his fifth bout, where his opponent will be the famous and experienced Ukrainian Oleg Platov.  The 26-year old Platov has a record of 30 professional   fights, from which 28 wins (22 knockouts), one stopped fight due to an accidental headbutt and only one loss on points against the journeyman Ludovik Mace. Despite his great experience, Platov hasn’t met a high-profile boxer except the English Danny Williams. The fight between the two was stopped due to a head clash. Platov is 30 in the unofficial world boxrec ranking, while Pulev is 50. Pulev is both taller and 10 kg heavier than the Ukrainian.  The explosive punches of Platov, however, will be a permanent danger during the eight rounds of boxing  and in order to win, Pulev will have to fight perfectly from a distance.

  • Pulev outpoints Oloukun

    November 7 , 2009

Pulev vs OloukunKubrat Pulev won his third professional bout. This time he made it on points against the Nigerian Gbenga Oloukun (17-3, 10 KO`s), who was ranked number 9 in WBO . The Bulgarian boxer confidently controlled the bout and his punches were by far more effective. Oloukun, who won over former WBO heavyweight champion Lamon Brewster just two fights ago, could do nothing to disrupt Pulev. The Bulgarian took the first couple of rounds to adjust to the Nigerian’s style but then started to dominate due to his superior technical assets. All the rounds were judged for Pulev, who made a quantum leap up in class in this fight. After that win he is currently number 78 in the world boxrec ranking after only 3 fights behind his back. Next fight for Pulev will be on 5 December again in Germany.

On the same show David Haye was throned as the new WBA heavyweight champion. He won on points against the Russian giant Nikolay Valuev.

  • Serbezov made an impressive fight in Ireland

    October 27 , 2009

DSC_3251Stoyan Serbezov (1-2, 1KO) made an excellent performance against the former Irish amateur star and current professional boxer Willie Casey (2-0,1KO) during the boxing show in Dublin this Saturday, 24.10.2009. The boxer from the town of Burgas, who was one of the hot prospects  of Bulgarian amateur boxing four years ago, is back to the ring after a 3-year absence. He made his debut in the boxing show in Ruse, where he lost on points against the experienced Yordan Vasilev.  „Three years out of boxing is not a short period but with hard trainings and more fights I will compensate for the absence. I couldn`t reach the amateurs national team because of the great competition of Alexander Vladimirov and Detelin Dalakliev. Now I can fight in weight divisions between 54-58 kg against every boxer in the world. In my top form I can be a danger for anyone,” Serbezov comments. He signed a contract with the managerVasko Vasilev last month. “I like Serbezov`s style of play. He has a very good defence and needs just a little more confidence to become a nightmare for his opponents. His boxing is very attractive and it was not surprising that he received loud applauds from the audience in Dublin. If he continues to give such a performance, this boy will have a bright future and he will be able to win not only in Bulgaria but on the international scene, as well”, said Vasilev. The legend of Bulgarian boxing Kirkor Kirkorov also took part in the event. His opponent was Eddie Hyland (16-1) and the fight ended in the third round. Hyland attacked Kirkorov with body shots and managed to knock him down twice in the second round. After Kirkorov was down again in the third round the referee decided to stop the contest.

  • The Cobra on the undercard of Valuev-Haye

    October 26 , 2009

Pulev-ProKubrat Pulev, The Cobra, will be on the undercard of the fight for the world heavyweight title between the giant Nikolay Valuev and David Haye (UK). The two stars will meet on 7 October in Nuremberg. The winner will have the belt of the World Boxing Association.
