Queues outside Balkanstroy Hall showed how much Pleven had been looking forward to this night. On 25 April 2026, Yosif Panov returned to his hometown and stopped Venezuela’s Joniker Tovar after just 90 seconds of the first round.
It was Yosif’s second professional bout in his hometown. The first, against Konstantin Aleksandrov – The Russian, took place in June 2018. Years of battles in other cities and countries followed, along with championship belts and major tests. Now Panov was boxing at home again, with far more history behind his name.
Years of work. A 90-second finish.
Panov found the finish through accuracy and explosive power right from the start. Tovar was knocked down and the fight ended before either man reached the first interval. For some spectators, it probably looked easy. We know how much work it takes to make a victory look that way.
A quick finish sometimes hides the preparation better than a long fight. From the stands, you see the punch; behind it are repetition, discipline and the ability to seize the right moment. In Pleven, those qualities came together in a brief, decisive performance.
Tovar’s experience in Europe
The Venezuelan entered with 23 wins, 7 losses and 1 draw. Behind him were professional bouts dating back to 2017 and a clash with unbeaten Belgian Anas Messaoudi, who was already heading towards the European title at the time.
In April 2025, Tovar reached the fifth round against Messaoudi before being stopped. A year later, Panov completed his task in the first. Tovar had experience and wins behind him, but that night Yosif’s accuracy and explosive punching gave him no time to show them.
Fighting belongs only in the ring
That was also the message of the entire event. Panov takes part in meetings and talks at schools and institutions, where he speaks against violence. For him, setting an example continues outside the gym: discipline, self-control and respect for others are part of sport’s purpose.
With support from the local commission for combating antisocial behaviour at Pleven Municipality, this cause gained another stage. Young people could see strength expressed within rules, responsibility and respect between opponents.
The celebration was bigger than the main event
An amateur team match between Bulgaria and Romania added closely contested bouts to the programme. Bulgaria’s team included young boxers from Pleven’s Mizia club, following in Yosif’s footsteps.
As a team, we felt Pleven behind this event from the entrance onwards. Then came the tension around the ring, the spectacle and the joy after the win. The organisation and the fights came together in a true sporting celebration for the city.
