We arrived in Bournemouth believing Mario Vergiev could win. On 6 June 2026, The Gladiator faced unbeaten Leon Hughes at Zuffa Boxing 7 in the Bournemouth International Centre. For our team, the first Bulgarian appearance on that stage was a major opportunity.
Vasko Alexeev joined Mario’s coach, Aleksandar Aleksandrov, in his corner. We had a plan and believed he would get his chance. Hughes proved faster, more technically accomplished and more complete than we had anticipated.
When the game plan didn’t work
We expected Hughes to tire, give ground and let Mario apply pressure. The Gladiator likes hard exchanges and making an opponent work. First, though, he had to close the distance against the Englishman’s speed and sharp reactions.
Hughes never let him settle. Mario tried to force his own fight, but the Briton stayed accurate, quick and in control. The drop in pace we had expected never came.
Who is Leon Hughes?
At 21, Hughes entered the night with four professional wins from four fights, three by knockout. Behind his short professional record is a serious grounding: he represented England in amateur boxing and trains with brothers Michael and Dave Jennings in Coppull, Lancashire.
Michael Jennings is a former British welterweight champion who challenged Miguel Cotto for the WBO world title at Madison Square Garden in 2009. Together with Dave, he has developed Hughes since his amateur years. Bournemouth showed the result of that work: a young boxer who chooses his punches calmly and feels confident under the lights of a major event.
A hard lesson. Respect for Hughes.
The bout, scheduled for six rounds at light heavyweight, ended by technical knockout at 0:52 of the third round. Mario’s professional record became 8–5, while Hughes moved to 5–0 with four stoppage wins.
After the fight, Mario told us this was the strongest opponent he had faced. In his view, the Englishman has the qualities to win future world titles. This was the personal assessment of someone who had felt his speed and punches from inside the ring. Disappointment in his own performance did not stop The Gladiator from acknowledging the quality in front of him.
Opening the door for Bulgarian boxing
Defeat hurts, especially when you set out convinced you can win. Yet our work with Zuffa Boxing on this bout opened an important door. Mario was the first Bulgarian to step through it and represent our country on a new international stage.
We want more Bulgarian boxers to get the same chance after him. We will keep working towards that. And when the first Bulgarian victory at Zuffa Boxing comes, we will know where the journey began: on this night in Bournemouth, with The Gladiator’s hopes, effort and courage.
