Roberto Durán, Riddick Bowe and Shawn Porter were among the champions in Acapulco for the WBC’s annual convention in November 2022. Alexeev Boxing joined them and the promoters, officials and others shaping professional boxing.
The occasion was the World Boxing Council’s 60th annual convention, held from 6 to 11 November 2022 in the Mexican resort. The Palacio Mundo Imperial complex hosted the official opening. For Vasko Alexeev, the trip brought together personal meetings with great champions and the professional environment where the sport’s future is discussed.
Meeting Roberto Durán
Meeting Roberto Durán carries a special charge for anyone devoted to boxing. Hands of Stone is a four-division world champion whose career spans five decades. Behind the name stand 103 professional wins and rivalries still studied in gyms today.
Standing beside Durán means standing beside a man who changed perceptions of inside fighting, willpower and championship longevity. The photograph with Vasko Alexeev preserves that meeting. For our team, such moments also serve as reminders of how high the bar can be in professional boxing.
Riddick Bowe and Shawn Porter: different generations, shared character
Riddick Bowe’s name recalls the great heavyweight era of the nineties. In 1992, he defeated Evander Holyfield to win the WBA, WBC and IBF world belts. Their trilogy remains one of the division’s defining rivalries, with Bowe winning two of the three meetings.
Shawn Porter represented another era and another rhythm — the welterweight division, constant pressure and high-speed battles. In Acapulco, he also played an active role in the official opening. His meeting with Vasko Alexeev added another major name to the experiences of that week.
Planning the next move
The convention had a full working programme. World rankings and mandatory challengers were discussed; there were seminars for judges and referees, a medical programme and professional working meetings. These subjects directly affect the boxer: the route to a title, how his work is judged and the conditions in which he enters the ring.
For a management organisation, being present in such an environment provides a broader perspective. A good fight requires preparation in the gym, but also people who can build the opportunity around it. In Acapulco, these two sides of the sport met constantly.
A Bulgarian presence in boxing’s wider conversation
Our work starts with an individual boxer and their next opportunity to compete. International meetings matter through that task: knowing the environment into which we want to take Bulgarian athletes and being part of the conversation about its development.
Mexico left us with personal meetings with champions and a sense of professional boxing’s scale. Durán, Bowe and Porter each reminded us in a different way what stands behind a great name — years of competition, tough opponents and a willingness to prove yourself again.
